World Sight Day

Posted under Low Vision Info

Every year since 2000, on the second Thursday of October, we celebrate World Sight Day: a global initiative to increase awareness on avoidable blindness and low vision. Coordinated by Vision2020, It’s a day in which the visually impaired community bands together in a unified effort to remind governments, agencies, and companies about research, medical innovations, and assistive technology to help those in need. World Sight Day is an opportunity to share information with target audiences about keeping healthy eyes and preserving their vision. Over 285 million people worldwide (19 million children) live with low vision or total blindness, and this number will continue to rise. Increasing elderly populations in many countries means that more and more people will be at risk for age-related visual impairments; it’s likely that you reading this will encounter some vision loss at some point. However, through knowledge and awareness, most vision loss can be avoided. World Sight Day reminds us to schedule regular eye exams, keep a healthy diet, and to stay informed on current research and new assistive technology.
