Observing Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month in August

Posted on Aug.18, 2025, under Educational

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, and as children head back to school, it’s a reminder of how important it is to protect and care for young eyes. Healthy vision plays a crucial role in a child’s learning, development, and overall well-being. Vision problems can sometimes go unnoticed, especially in school-age children, which is why regular eye exams are key to detecting issues early.

According to Prevent Blindness, “Uncorrected vision problems can impair child development, interfere with learning, and even lead to permanent vision loss.” As children continue to grow and change, so can their vision. Here are just a few common pediatric eye conditions:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Objects at a distance may be blurry.
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Objects up close may be blurry.
  • Astigmatism: Blurred vision at any distance due to the eye’s shape being irregular.
  • Lazy Eye (Amblyopia): The brain ignores one eye’s input and favors the other, causing reduced vision in the ignored eye.

If a child is experiencing vision loss, it’s important to be aware of the tools to help them remain independent and continue to succeed academically. Some tools may include electronic magnifiers or screen-reading software.

This month is also about eye safety. From sports to playground activities, children are active and curious, which means accidents can happen. Protective eyewear for sports, limiting screen time, and encouraging outdoor play can all help safeguard their vision.

By prioritizing children’s eye health, we help them see clearly, learn confidently, and enjoy the world around them. August is the perfect time to schedule an eye exam, review safety practices, and give kids the tools they need for a bright, healthy future.
