February Low Vision Tips – Food Preparation-Cutting

Preparing your fruits and vegetables may be easier than you think with some of the wonderful tools available. If using a knife is a bit intimidating, consider using blade-free food choppers. This is a good option to help protect your fingers while chopping up your favorite vegetables. If you prefer a knife for slicing, you may want to try using a slicing guide. With a simple turn of a knob, you can select your desired thickness and begin slicing without having to use your fingers as a guide. Using a reversible black and white cutting board is also a good idea as it provides color contrast against what you are preparing.

I am 59 years old and I developed Stargardt’s disease when I was 11 years old (even though they didn’t know what it was back then), and by the time I was 16, I was legally blind (20/200).  I worked for the National Park Service for 32 years and was on a technical rescue team for all of that time which required hundreds of hours of training as well as being called on many rescues. I participated in rescues in all types of conditions and in all types of terrain, using helicopters as well as many miles of hiking and climbing over rough country.  My eyesight degraded to about 20/400 into my 10th year with the NPS, but I continued on the rescue team.  I am now retired and am still called on rescues for the county and I actually have been their high angle team leader and training officer for the past 2 years. To all those young people out there with this disease, please do not give up your dreams and keep trying; there is much for you to do and accomplish.  I know, I have been there.

December Low Vision Tips – Writing

Holiday cards are something that most of us enjoy sending to our friends and loved ones during this season and if you have low vision, there are several items that can help. Some basic items include writing guides and signature guides. These items are typically made of plastic and have rectangular cutouts like a stencil. They are designed to help you maintain a straight line when writing. A larger tip writing pen or 20/20 pen can also help by making your writing bolder. Another alternative would be electronic magnification such as the Merlin desktop magnifier. With the Merlin, you can place your writing materials on the magnifier, adjust the magnification and the color contrast to your desired level and begin writing in comfort. Merlin also offers a line marker feature (additional hardware may be required) which helps you keep your place while writing. To Read More Click Here

Comments such as the one below from Mr. Frank Porcelli are such a pleasure to read and share. It is an amazing feeling to know that with the help of assistive technology people can overcome the hurdles of low vision and continue to remain independent and active.
“I work as a dental technician. I construct false teeth. The work I do is very detailed; I was not able to see well enough to work anymore. I am 62 years old and not ready to stop working. Imagine having work to do but not being able to do it. When I got my acrobat reader it was like a miracle now I’m working again and making a fine product. I feel independent again and could work just as well as before I had low vision.”

Fun Facts ImageClaude Monet

Claude Monet, one of the most well known impressionist painters of our time, continued to produce remarkable pieces of art even though his vision was failing due to cataracts. Though he had to rely on the labeling of his tubes of paint and often painted by recollection, his determination and love of art would not allow him to give up. Nearly blind in the last decade of his life, Monet painted his Water Lily murals which are on display at the Musee de l’Orangerie in Paris. Click here.

Low Vision Tips ImageSeptember Low Vision Tips – Eccentric Viewing

If you suffer from central vision loss, eccentric viewing (also called Preferred Retinal Loci or PRL) techniques might help you increase the use your existing vision. This is a technique that may require training by a low vision rehabilitation specialist and involves having to re-learn your way of seeing. This is done by looking slightly away from what you want to see in order to view it peripherally. You may end up having to look to either side, below or above the object to focus on it clearly. Although this technique will not improve the retina, it can greatly maximize the vision you do have. To read more: click here.
